For over five generations, our family has farmed the land here in Winsley. Today, we rear native-breed, grass-fed cattle on the pastures around Hartley. Respect for the land and animals runs deep in our roots, and that same care carries through into our butchery.
Great meat starts long before it reaches the counter — with healthy animals and responsible farming. At Hartley, that means respect for the animal, always putting welfare and good husbandry first. It means patience in the process, letting cattle grow naturally on a grass-fed diet before being dry-aged the traditional way for flavour and tenderness. And it means pride in the craft, with skilled butchery by hand, shaped by generations of knowledge.
FARM TO FORK
All of the meat served in our Farm Kitchen and used in our bakery is prepared by our own butchery team. Alongside beef from our herd, we source from trusted local farmers who share our values, ensuring every cut is fully traceable and responsibly produced. From there, our butchers supply the counters in our shop as well as the dishes we cook and serve, bringing the whole farm-to-fork story together.
As well as our visiting butchery counter, you can pre-order our meat boxes for local delivery or click and collect.
BEEF
From our own Hereford herd here on the farm throughout the year. We also source from other known and trusted local farms.
LAMB
We source our grass-fed lamb from the Carnie family at Lenton Farm in Broughton Gifford, just 5 miles away.
PORK
Our pork is outdoor-reared from James Mitchell’s farm in Somerset and our bacon and gammon from Cornish Farmhouse.
POULTRY
Our free-range poultry is sourced from Cotswold & Devon farms. We also source game from local shoots and estates and our Christmas birds are sourced from the Walters family in Berkshire.
THE FARM SHOP
At the heart of our Farm Shop is a simple idea — to bring together the best food from our land and community, inspired by the seasons. Every morning, fresh loaves arrive from local bakers, while our fruit and veg displays celebrate the seasons, with much of the produce grown here at Hartley. Our counters brim with the best of British cheese and dairy, and our bakery fills the shelves with handmade pies, cakes, and fresh salads prepared daily.
To stock your larder, you’ll also find a tempting range of local chutneys, jams and jellies, alongside everything to inspire your next dish. For everyday living, our refill section offers sustainable cleaning products, helping you shop with care for the environment. And, as a thank you for supporting local, our loyalty card rewards you every time you shop.
Everything we do reflects the Hartley way: championing local growers and makers, celebrating seasonal food, and preparing it all with thought and care, so you can take home a true taste of the farm.

As you walk through our Farm Shop, you’ll find our Gift Barn — a space that evolves with the seasons and celebrates the makers in our community. Just like our food, we love to champion local craftspeople, curating a thoughtful range of gifts to treat yourself or someone special. From cookware and crockery to textiles, candles and gift cards, our shelves are always full of beautiful finds chosen with care.
Alongside this, we stock seasonal plants, gardening essentials and fresh flowers every weekend, bringing a touch of the outdoors inside. At Christmas, Easter, and other key moments in the year, the Gift Barn is transformed with festive decorations, hampers and seasonal treasures that make finding something unique easy and joyful. BIG GREEN EGG
We’re proud to be official UK dealers of the Big Green Egg — the ultimate outdoor cooker. More than just a barbecue, it’s a smoker, slow cooker, pizza oven and charcoal grill all in one. Its versatility and unique ceramic design make it a favourite for professional chefs and home cooks alike.
At Hartley, we don’t just sell them — we cook with them every day in our Farm Kitchen. Many of our dishes are prepared over the coals, giving them their incredible flavour. Our team are resident Eggsperts, so whether you’re curious about the Big Green Egg, ready to buy, or simply want to see one in action, we’re here to help.

THE CABIN & PLAY AREA
The Cabin is our little spot for great coffee, homemade cakes, ice cream and food to go — all freshly prepared with the same Hartley care. Set right beside our natural play area, flower garden and paddock, it’s the perfect place for families to pause and enjoy time together.
While little ones explore, climb and discover, grown-ups can relax with a coffee, savour a slice of cake or tuck into a fresh, seasonal bite. On warmer days, nothing beats a scoop of local ice cream enjoyed in the open air. With plenty of space to roam and nature all around, The Cabin offers a relaxed, family-friendly setting that makes every visit to the farm that little bit more memorable
